There are two stages in the DM plants: cation exchange and anion exchange. In the cation exchange procedure, positively charged ions such as magnesium, calcium and sodium are removed from the water by exchange with hydrogen ions. On the other hand, in the anion exchange stage, the negatively charged ions such as bicarbonate, chloride are removed from the water by exchange with hydroxide ions. Purified water is collected after the completion of the stages.
